Nearly eight out of every 10 eligible adults said that they would definitely vote in the Dec. 19 presidential election.
In a nationwide survey of 1,000 adults, conducted by The Korea Times and Hankook Ilbo together with pollster Media Research on Thursday, 79.7 percent said that they will surely cast ballots, up 5.6 percentage points from the previous poll on Nov. 26.
Changes in the popularity of presidential candidates were also surveyed but couldn’t be disclosed under the election law, which bars the publication of the results of candidate opinion polls during the official campaigning period.
If including another 13.8 percent who were less sure to vote, the survey showed voter turnout could reach as high as 93.5 percent.
More than 90 percent of those in their 50s and 60s said that they would certainly vote, while by region, Honam, the stronghold of President Kim Dae-jung, was highest with 90.3 percent.
Regarding recent allegations that the National Intelligence Service illegally eavesdropped on telephone conversations of high-ranking figures, 31.6 percent believed that they were true, while 36.5 percent thought that they were a hoax for a political smear campaign.
About 70 percent of the respondents said that they watched the televised debate by three candidates, and about 8 percent either changed their minds or were considering changing their minds about their favored candidate.
