The U.S. government began cracking down on undocumented immigrants on January 21, the day after President Donald Trump’s inauguration.
Tom Homan, the Trump administration's "Border Czar," confirmed in a CNN interview that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) had initiated operations targeting undocumented immigrants across the country.
ICE plans to primarily target undocumented individuals with criminal records.
Homan stated, "Our priority is those who are in this country illegally and have been convicted of crimes, posing a threat to public safety."
He explained that while ICE has identified the locations of undocumented immigrants with criminal records, enforcement efforts are hindered in “sanctuary cities” due to lack of cooperation from local authorities. As a result, ICE agents are forced to search for their targets in the community.
“Sanctuary cities” refer to localities that either do not cooperate with federal immigration enforcement or outright prohibit such cooperation. These cities are often led by Democratic officials.
Homan also noted that undocumented immigrants without criminal records who are encountered during enforcement actions will also be detained and deported.
“There will be more collateral arrests in sanctuary cities because they force us to enter communities to locate our targets,” Homan said.
Detained undocumented immigrants will be held in custody and subsequently deported to their home countries or third countries, he explained.
