SEOUL The government has set its sights on Samsung Group for an in-depth probe into alleged illegal in-house subsidization involving e-commerce firms run by the children of the conglomerates head Lee Kun-hee.
In a press conference Aug. 9, newly-appointed Fair Trade Commission (FTC) chairman Lee Nam-kee told reporters, "e-Samsung, run by Lee Jae-ryong, the son of chairman Lee, will be investigated for allegedly receiving inter-affiliate subsidization next week when investigations start into four chaebol Hyundai, Samsung, LG and SK."
The probe into the top four chaebol is scheduled to begin on Aug. 16 and continue for 45 days, the FTC chairman said.
Focus will be given on e-commerce firms run by children of the big companies to see whether these firms have been used as an extra-legal way of handing down wealth from generation to generation, Lee said.
"We are also planning to check whether or not the parent conglomerates are engaged in such illegal activities as subsidizing their spinoffs," Lee said. "The restructuring committees of the chaebol are suspected of playing a role in coordinating and controlling affiliates. These suspicions will be checked."
The FTC chairman added that the forthcoming investigations will be more intense than previous ones.
FTC officials said five to six affiliates, from each of the four groups, will be selected and undergo probes in addition to 30 to 40 spinoffs.
